Following years of persistent strain on food systems and the displacement of large populations due to a variety of weather-induced disaster shocks, BNGRC is partnering with the University of Hawai’i’s Pacific Disaster Center (PDC) to undertake a year-long National Disaster Preparedness Baseline Assessment.
BNGRC welcomed the assessment on October 16, 2024, which took place at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Antananarivo, Madagascar, bringing together more than 60 representatives from across the Malagasy Government, national and international partners including the United Nations, non-governmental organizations, and academia.

As the second hardest hit nation throughout the Southern Africa region by disasters in 2022, Madagascar is facing one of the worst cycles of drought in more than 40 years along with devastating flood and tropical cyclone impacts. The assessment aims to identify investments and priorities for dealing with these and other challenges by focusing on increasing resilience, reducing vulnerabilities, and improving strategies through science, evidence-based data, and advanced analytics.
