The future has arrived
Self-learning machines for every type of hazard and risk at a global scale.
PDC’s advanced data science and AI technologies are not only analyzing enormous amounts of information with unprecedented speed, but creating new data and insights never before available to help save lives and build safer, more resilient communities worldwide.
Advanced natural language processing and generative AI capabilities
PDC’s advanced natural language processing and generative AI is being leveraged to greatly reduce the manual labor and time involved with finding, analyzing, and curating global hazard content. This allows PDC to provide more comprehensive coverage of hazard events around the globe through its DisasterAWARE Pro risk intelligence and early warning platform. These repetitive and time consuming tasks are now performed by AI Hazard Finder with greater speed and accuracy than ever before possible.

How it works:
- PDC’s hazard identification architecture leverages AI Hazard Finder Generative AI and Natural Language Processing (NLP) to help with exposure estimation and human-readable hazard information which is then integrated into automated products, DisasterAWARE, and more.
- Generative AI and NLP are also used to increase global hazard detection including hazard type, location, and time of occurrence.
- AI Hazard Finder helps create continuous efficiency through reduction of manual hazard curation.
- AI Hazard Finder features a new interactive map to allow more precise manual adjustment of AI-generated exposure areas.
Rapid Analysis with Machine Learning
Improving speed, scalability and revealing hidden information
New machine learning algorithms were deployed by PDC in 2024 to improve the scalability and speed of the Center’s global assessments as well as help uncover new data relationships for an improved understanding of potential risks.
These algorithms rapidly identify patterns and new dimensions for analysis while reducing data redundancies and the amount of data required for meaningful assessments. Whereas it was previously too time consuming, PDC is able to quickly conduct temporal analyses over large time spans with machine learning and across country groups. This added dimension of analysis helps inform future projection models and aids decision makers with the prioritization of actions and investments in long-term resilience.

New frontiers for PDC’s AI exploration
How the transformative power of speech-to-text and generative AI can save more lives
When faced with a disaster, time saved equates to lives saved and AI presents a very real opportunity to save more lives. The more quickly populations receive early warnings and the more vulnerable populations we reach, the fewer the losses.
PDC is experimenting with new text-to-speech applications to allow those with hearing and mobility impairments to still benefit from early warning and preparedness alerts sent via its DisasterAWARE and Disaster Alert applications. Also in development are assistive applications for generative AI which can provide role-based and context-specific information about what steps to take next.
