Tropical Cyclones

Tropical Cyclone 09E (Iselle) is located about 555 miles west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California

Tropical Cyclone 01C (Lala) is located about 390 miles north-northeast of Kure Atoll

Tropical Cyclone 02C (Moke) is located about 445 miles southwest of Hilo, Hawaii

Northeast Pacific:  

Tropical Cyclone 09E (Iselle) 

ISELLE CONTINUES TO STRENGTHEN

According to the NHC advisory number 5…

Iselle is moving toward the northwest near 13 mph (20 km/h) and this motion is expected to continue through tonight, followed by a turn toward the west-northwest on Tuesday. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 65 mph (100 km/h) with higher gusts. Some strengthening is expected over the next 12 to 24 hours, and Iselle could become a hurricane by tonight. Gradual weakening is then forecast starting later on Tuesday. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles (220 km) from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 992 mb (29.30 inches).

HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND

SURF: Swells generated by Iselle are affecting the west coast of the Baja California Peninsula, and will continue for a couple more days. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

 

>>> Well Southwest of the Baja California Peninsula:

Invest 91E

Satellite wind data indicate that the small area of low pressure located well to the southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula has become a little better defined. However, the shower and thunderstorm activity remains disorganized. Environmental conditions could still support the development of a short-lived tropical depression during the next day or so while the system moves generally northward, before it becomes absorbed by Tropical Storm Iselle.

>>> Well Southwest of Southwestern Mexico:

An area of low pressure is expected to develop well south of the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula during the middle portion of this week. Some slow development is expected thereafter, and a tropical depression is likely to form later this week or over the weekend while the system moves generally west-northwestward.

* Formation chance through 48 hours…low…near 0 percent
* Formation chance through 7 days…high…70 percent

 

>>> Well offshore of Southern Mexico:

Another area of low pressure could form well offshore of Central America late this week. Environmental conditions appear conducive for some gradual development of this system over the weekend while it moves westward to west-northwestward at 10 to 15 mph well offshore of southern Mexico.

>>> Western East Pacific:

A broad area of low pressure is forecast to form well to the east-southeast of the Hawaiian Islands during the middle part of the week. Some slow development of this system is possible later this week while it moves northeastward or northward across the western portion of the East Pacific.

Central north Pacific:  

Tropical Cyclone 01C (Lala) 

LALA HOLDING STEADY MOVING NORTHWESTWARD

According to the NHC advisory number 49…

Lala is moving toward the northwest near 5 mph (7 km/h). A slow northwestward motion is forecast during the next few days. Maximum sustained winds are near 65 mph (100 km/h) with higher gusts. Gradual weakening is forecast during the next several days. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 km) from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 988 mb (29.18 inches).

 

Tropical Cyclone 02C (Moke) 

FLASH FLOOD THREAT CONTINUES FOR PORTIONS OF THE BIG ISLAND OF HAWAII

According to the NHC advisory number 17…

The depression is moving toward the west near 14 mph (22 km/h). and this motion is expected to continue for the next day or two, taking the system farther away from the Hawaiian Islands. Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph (55 km/h) with higher gusts. Weakening is expected, and Moke is forecast to degenerate to a remnant low pressure area late today and dissipate on Tuesday. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1004 mb (29.65 inches).

HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND 

RAINFALL: Tropical Depression Moke is expected to produce additional rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches through Monday across the Big Island and an additional 1 to 3 inches on eastern Maui. This rainfall may produce areas of flash flooding for the windward and southeast Big Island, especially in steep terrain and over areas that were affected recently by Lala. Flood prone and low lying locations, as well as urban areas may also see instances of flash flooding.

 

Western Pacific, Indian Ocean, and adjacent Seas: 

Western Pacific

Tropical Cyclone 17W (Saudel)

According to the JTWC warning number 25…Sustained winds were 100 knots with gusts to 125 knots

Animated enhanced infrared (eir) satellite imagery depicts typhoon 17w (saudel) having become much more irregular over the past 6 hours with a clear weakness in the northwestern quadrant of the eyewall and a
cooling eye. There appears to be some dry air intruding into the vortex within the western semicircle and northwesterly shear is starting to increase. A 240914z rcm-1 sar pass revealed a vmax of 100 kts in the eastern portion of the eyewall. The sar also showed that the wind field has become somewhat asymmetric with the strongest winds located in the eastern and northern portions of the circulation. A 240934z gmi 37 ghz microwave image confirmed that the inner core has become a bit disorganized with a fragmented microwave eye feature. t

Environmental analysis indicates that 17w is now in a marginally favorable environment characterized by strong
radial outflow aloft, 10-15 kts northwesterly shear, dry air, and warm (28-29 c) sea surface temperatures.

TY 17w is forecast to continue tracking west-northwestward through 36 hours, passing just north of Okinawa at around 30 hours. Near 36 hours, 17w will approach a weakness in the steering ridge to the north, causing it to slow down markedly as the primary steering mechanism shifts to a subtropical ridge (str) centered over
eastern China. Track speeds are expected to remain slow through 60 hours before the steering gradient becomes stronger. After 60 hours, the speed of advance of 17w is forecast to begin increasing with a southwestward trajectory as the system tracks along the southeastern periphery of the str over China through the remainder of the forecast period. Landfall over eastern China is currently forecast to occur just before 96 hours.

In terms of intensity, 17w is forecast to continue gradually weakening under the effects of increasing northwesterly shear and dry air entrainment. Additionally, the upper-level trough currently to the west of the system is expected to move westward and fill, reducing outflow aloft. At around 72 hours, northeasterly shear will greatly increase, induced by the strong ridge over eastern China causing a more rapid rate of weakening as the system approaches the coast. After landfall, rugged terrain interaction will cause the vortex to rapidly weaken with dissipation forecast to occur around 120 hours, well north of Hong Kong.

 

Tropical Cyclone 18W (Narra) 

According to the JTWC warning number 16…Sustained winds were 40 knots with gusts to 50 knots

Snimated enhanced infrared (eir) satellite imagery depicts tropical storm 18w (narra) with warming cloud tops that are beginning to be heavily sheared off to the southwest. A 241107z gmi 89 ghz microwave image revealed minimal convective structure to the west of the low-level circulation center (llcc).

Environmental analysis indicates that 18w is now in a marginal environment characterized by moderate equatorward outflow aloft, moderate to high (25-30 kts) vertical wind shear, dry air entrainment, and warm (29-30 c) sea surface temperatures

TS 18w is forecast to begin tracking slowly eastward over the next 12 hours as the str ridge to the north weakens
and the ner to the south becomes the primary steering mechanism. After 12 hours, 18w is expected to turn poleward, ushered by the ner building to the southeast of the system. Landfall within southern China is forecast to occur around 48 hours near the Leizhou Peninsula.

Regarding intensity, 18w is forecast to begin weakening throughout its approach to the coast of China as east-northeasterly shear and dry air entrainment begins to further increase. After landfall, terrain interaction will quickly weaken the vortex with dissipation anticipated to occur no later than 60 hours as the remnant vortex tracks further inland.

 

Tropical Cyclone 19W (Atsani) 

According to the JTWC warning number 9…Sustained winds were 30 knots with gusts to 40 knots

Animated enhanced infrared (eir) satellite imagery depicts tropical depression (td) 19w (atsani) with a nearly fully exposed low-level circulation center (llcc) with a recent convective flare-up along the southwestern periphery. The system has slowed down over the last 6hours, while a subtropical ridge (str) centered to the northeast assumed primary steering. Consequently, a northward translation vector is initiating to dominate the direction of motion. A binary Fujiwhara interaction remains active as the distance between td 19w and typhoon (ty) 17w remains within the critical distance threshold.

The meteorological environment remains marginally unfavorable for further intensification. Although sea surface temperatures (sst) remain very warm (29-30 c), the equatorward outflow channel provides minimal assistance. Simultaneously, high (25-30 kts) northeasterly vertical wind shear (vws) arrests any central convective structuring.
moreover, although tropospheric moisture persists to the west, unfavorable mid-level dry-air advection continues to wrap around and into the inner vortex core.

TS 19w is forecast to begin turning northward and eventually northwestward over the next 12 to 24 hours, ultimately retreating into the highly sheared wake of typhoon 17w. This evolution marks the onset of the terminal weakening of td atsani, dictated by increasingly hostile northeasterly vws and relentless core dry-air entrainment.

Consequently, the system will sustain 30 kts only transiently. structural degradation will be rapid as the llcc loses
its symmetric dynamics and opens up, particularly across the western semicircle. Complete dissipation over water is projected by 36 hours.
