Typhoon Soudelor has made landfall in northeast Taiwan arriving early in the morning (local time) near Hualien and is expected to cause severe and catastrophic damage as it moves over Taiwan.

According to the latest information from JTWC, Soudelor will weaken rapidly as it crosses the mountainous terrain of Taiwan. The system will then cross into the Taiwan Strait at typhoon strength, although much weaker, before making a final landfall in China, where it is expected to rapidly erode and dissipate.

Soudelor made landfall directly over Saipan on August 2 (local time). According to the latest situation report from the U.S. Department of Energy, Saipan remains without power, water, or wastewater services. It is estimated that full restoration of power will take three weeks.
