There’s a tropical disturbance being referred to as Invest 97W, which is located approximately 122 NM south of Haikou, Hainan Island, China.
Here’s what the computer models are showing
According to the JTWC, satellite imagery reveals a partially exposed lower level circulation center with flaring convection sheared along the western semicircle.
Upper-level analysis reveals a marginally favorable environment for development characterized by equatorward outflow, and warm sea surface temperatures, offset by moderate to high (20-30 knot) wind shear.
Global dynamic models are in good agreement that 97W will experience marginal consolidation and strengthening as it propagates northwestward towards Hainan.
Maximum sustained surface winds are estimated at 18-23 knots.
The potential for the development of a significant tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours remains high.
