Post-Tropical Cyclone o9L (Ida) is located about 35 miles east of Hagerstown, Maryland – Last Advisory

POST-TROPICAL CYCLONE IDA BRINGING WIDESPREAD HEAVY RAIN AND AREAS OF LIFE THREATENING FLASH FLOODING ALONG AND NEAR TRACK…AN ENHANCED RISK FOR TORNADOES ACROSS THE NORTHERN MID-ATLANTIC AND FAR SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND THROUGH THIS EVENING

Here’s what the computer models are showing for Tropical Cyclone 09L (Ida)

According the NHC Advisory 27…The post-tropical cyclone is moving toward the east-northeast near 25 mph (41 km/h) and this motion is expected to continue.

Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph (55 km/h) with higher gusts. Little change in strength is forecast during the next 36 hours.

HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND

RAINFALL: Tropical Depression Ida will produce the following rainfall totals:

Mid Atlantic to Southern New England: 3 to 8 inches with isolated higher amounts through Thursday.

Significant and life-threatening flash flooding is likely from the Mid-Atlantic into southern New England, especially across highly urbanized metropolitan areas and areas of steep terrain. Widespread moderate and major river flooding impacts are forecast from northern West Virginia and western Maryland into southern Pennsylvania and New Jersey, particularly in the Monongahela, Potomac, Susquehanna, Delaware, and lower Hudson river basins.

Widespread minor to isolated major river flooding is occurring or forecast from the Lower Mississippi Valley into far western Alabama and northeast Georgia. Rivers will remain elevated into next week.

TORNADOES: Several tornadoes are probable across portions of the Mid Atlantic today, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours.

Tropical Cyclone 12L (Larry)

LARRY’S STRENGTHENING PAUSES, BUT INTENSIFICATION LIKELY TO RESUME LATER TONIGHT AND THURSDAY

Here’s what the computer models are showing for Tropical Cyclone 12L (Larry)

According the NHC Advisory 6…Larry is moving toward the west near 21 mph (33 km/h), and this general motion should continue through Thursday night. A gradual turn toward the west-northwest and a decrease in forward speed are expected Friday and Friday night.

A slightly slower west- northwestward motion is expected on Saturday. Maximum sustained winds remain near 70 mph (110 km/h) with higher gusts.

Steady to rapid strengthening is forecast during the next couple of days, and Larry is expected to become a hurricane later tonight or early Thursday, and a major hurricane Friday or Friday night.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles (110 km) from the center.

Caribbean Sea

A small area of low pressure located just off the coast of Nicaragua is producing disorganized shower and thunderstorm activity.

This low is expected to move inland over Nicaragua tonight, but a portion of the low’s circulation could move over the Gulf of Honduras on Thursday and Friday, where development, if any, is expected to be slow to occur.

This system could then move over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico during the weekend and early next week, but by then strong upper-level winds would likely limit significant development.

Regardless of development, heavy rains are possible across portions of Central America and the Yucatan Peninsula through the weekend.

* Formation chance through 48 hours…low…10 percent
* Formation chance through 5 days…low…20 percent
