PDC Global Hazards Atlas displaying 3 hour precipitation, and an area of disturbed weather in the Timor Sea
There continues to be an area of disturbed weather (being referred to as Invest 98S), located approximately 375 NM north-northeast of Broome, Australia. Satellite imagery shows flaring thunderstorms over a broad, although ill-defined low level circulation center.
Satellite imagery also shows fragmented convective cloud banding around the periphery of the low level circulation center, especially over the northern semi-circle…due to disruption by Timor Island.
These satellite pictures show the broad nature of the circulation, with 15-20 knot (17-23 mph) winds over the eastern and western periphery of the circulation. Ship reports near the center indicate light winds.
Upper air analysis indicates a marginally favorable environment, with weak to moderate (10-20 knot) vertical wind shear, and good poleward outflow…into a deep trough of low pressure located over central Australia.
Computer weather models indicate significant development of this disturbance, after it moves south to southwest, away from Timor Island…over the next 1-2 days.
Given the environmental factors noted above, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) is giving this tropical disturbance a low chance of developing into a substantial tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours.
Here’s a satellite image of this area.
