Tropical cyclone 01W (Sonamu) remains active in the South China Sea, located about 335 NM west of Malaysia. 01W has drifted east-southeast at 03 knots over the past six hours. Satellite imagery shows isolated flares of deep convection, along with weak convective banding over whats left of the low level circulation center. The JTWC suggests that this tropical cyclone will weaken throughout the remainder of its life cycle. Sonamu will continue to encounter moderate to strong vertical wind shear, and land interaction after 48 hours…both of which will put an end to this tropical cyclone. This dissipating system will nonetheless be able to bring gusty breezes, and rainfall over northwest Malaysia over the next several days.

Tropical cyclone 08S (Narelle) is now active in the South Indian Ocean, located about 605 NM north-northeast of Learmonth, Australia. Narelle has tracked west-southwest at near 09 knots over the past six hours. Animated satellite imagery shows a consolidating low level circulation center. Environmental conditions are favorable for continued growth, as the vertical wind shear is weak to moderate…10-20 knots. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center is forecasting 08S to intensify rapidly, reaching a peak intensity 0f 130 knots, with gusts to near 160 knots within 72 hours. The forecast track brings Narelle close to the coast of Australia, so that very high surf, very strong winds, and heavy flooding rainfall are expected.
