PDC Weekly Global Flood Survey: March 22, 2012
In the past week, torrential rains have resulted in continued flooding in Australia, South America, Africa, and the United States. The west coast of South America, to include Ecuador, Peru, and Chile, continues to experience heavy rains and flooding. Flooding in Ecuador and Peru has persisted for over a month, leading to the displacement of thousands of people from their homes.
Below are current summaries of active flood events in Ecuador and Australia.
Precipitation & Flooding: Ecuador
According to a recent report issued by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN-OCHA), 58,800 people have been affected by rain and flooding in Ecuador since early January. Over half of the country’s provinces have been affected so far during the current rainy season. The government is actively responding to the event in coordination with national and international disaster and humanitarian organizations. PDC will continue to monitor the situation.
The forecast for Ecuador includes continued precipitation over the next several days.
Precipitation & Flooding: Queensland, Australia
PDC has continued to monitor flooding in Queensland, Australia, for over a month. According to RSOE EDIS, 20 people had to be evacuated from their cars in Cairns after becoming trapped by swift flood waters. In St. George and Sutherland Shire, houses were reported to be flooded and cars swept away by the floods. Flood Warnings continue to be issued throughout the state.
The forecast for Queensland includes continued precipitation over the next several days.
