Where’s the Rain? An Update on Drought Conditions around the World
Persistent abnormal dryness continues to impact areas of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, and is forecast to persist into the following week (CPC). Though some central areas of Hispaniola received heavy rainfall over the past week, rainfall remained below normal for places outside these local areas, and ground conditions continue to deteriorate over many parts of the island.
Below-average seasonal rainfall has also delayed planting in areas of Central America, with ground conditions continuing to degrade in parts of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica (CPC). Widespread above-average rainfall is expected over the next week, which may mitigate further impact on crops and encourage better soil conditions for a successful seasonal planting.
Conditions may also be improving for parts of eastern Africa, if favorable rainfall (as seen over the last week) continues (CPC). Uneven rainfall distribution during the March-May season impacted crops and ground conditions in parts of Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Djibouti, but increased rainfall should help improve conditions for agricultural activities during the June-September season. Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected to continue over parts of Ethiopia in the coming week.
RVA Country Profile: Dominican Republic
With less than adequate rainfall for the Dominican Republic remaining in the forecast, the PDC Global Risk and Vulnerability Index assesses the ability of an area to absorb and respond to negative impacts associated with hazard events via PDC’s Coping Capacity Index. As you can see below the Dominican Republic is ranked 103 out of 174 countries.
