Super Typhoon Closes in on Philippines; Volcanic Eruption in Cape Verde
Philippines Prepares for Hagupit
The Philippines is preparing “for everything” as Super Typhoon Hagupit continues on track toward the island nation (ReliefWeb, EC). The typhoon, also known as Ruby in the Philippines, rapidly intensified over the three days since it developed and is projected to make landfall on Samar Island (Eastern Visayas region) in the morning of December 6 (ReliefWeb/OCHA). As of the current advisory, Hagupit is located approximately 582 nautical miles east-southeast of Manila with maximum sustained winds of 145 knots (approx. 166 mph) (JTWC Advisory #16).
Pacific Disaster Center will continue to closely monitor Hagupit as it approaches the Philippines. Keep up with the latest information through PDC’s Weather Wall and by following PDC on Twitter and Facebook. Looking back just over a year ago, Super Typhoon Haiyan impacted this region of the Philippines, leading to recovery efforts still underway.
Fogo Volcano Erupts after Nearly 20 Years
Last week’s eruption of Cape Verde’s Fogo volcano (on November 23) was the first in 19 years, and the largest since 1951 (NASA). Approximately 1,000 residents of Chã das Caldeiras (which is situated within the volcano’s crater) were evacuated and no injuries have been reported (EC). As of December 2, the lava had reached the village of Portela, where it reportedly destroyed 57 buildings (ReliefWeb). According to the European Space Agency, radar images from the Sentinel-1A satellite (launched as part of Europe’s Copernicus environment monitoring programme) are being used the monitor the flow of magma from Fogo as part of an effort to collect data that could be used in the future to provide warnings before eruptions occur (ESA).
