Heavy Rain and Wind Forecast for Japan and India as Cyclones Approach
Super Typhoon Vongfong Continues on Track toward Japan
Japan has another hazard to prepare for as Super Typhoon Vongfong continues its north-northwestward track toward Okinawa (JTWC, NASA). As of October 9 (2100 UTC), Vongfong was located 353 miles south-southeast of Okinawa (Kadena U.S. Air Base) and kicking up waves of 42 feet (JTWC Warning #29). Vongfong is expected to make landfall in Kyushu, and as it approaches typhoon conditions are forecast to affect Okinawa and the islands of the Amami archipelago beginning October 10 (NASA). The Category 4 storm currently has maximum sustained winds near 150 miles per hour (130 knots), but is expected to slowly weaken over the next several days.
Hudhud Expected to Intensify before Making Landfall in India
As of October 9 (2100 UTC), Tropical Cyclone Hudhud was located 505 miles south of Kolkata, India, and was continuing west-northwestward with maximum sustained wind speeds near 70 miles per hour (60 knots) (JTWC Warning #8). Hudhud is forecast to bring heavy rainfall to the districts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha starting the evening of October 11, as it intensifies prior to making landfall near Visakhapatnam, India on October 12 (IMD, NASA). There is potential for Hudhud to have a high humanitarian impact as over 10 million people could be exposed to widespread to catastrophic damage due to the storm (GDACS, PDC Impact Report).
