Cyclone Coasts along Baja California; Asia Sees More Flooding
Hurricane Norbert Nears, Not Expected to Make Landfall
Hurricane Norbert is forecast to continue its northwesterly track along the Baja California Peninsula over the next couple of days (NHC Advisory #10A). As of Thursday afternoon (1400 PDT), Norbert was located about 115 miles south-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California with maximum sustained winds of 90 miles per hour.
Though not as dramatic as the high surf generated by Tropical Storm Marie last week, Norbert is expected to generate large swells through the weekend that will produce dangerous surf conditions and rip currents. Norbert is also expected to bring 3 to 6 inches of rainfall (near 10 inches possible in some areas) as it passes the southern part of the peninsula through Saturday.
Heavy Rainfall and Flood Conditions Continue in China, Thailand
Rainstorms in China’s Chongqing Municipality led to the evacuation of 39,000 people earlier this week (ReliefWeb). The government estimates that more than one million people in districts or counties in the northeast of Chongqing also suffered the effects of the storms, which caused the destruction of 2,251 homes and damaged 25,000 others. As of September 2, reports confirm 11 deaths due to the storms and 27 people still missing.
Widespread flooding across northern Thailand was also reported late August in provinces including Chiang Rai, Lampang, Nan, Pichit, and Buriram (ASEAN, ReliefWeb). It is estimated that more than 3,000 hectares of rice fields and over 17,000 hectares of other agricultural fields and were damaged due to conditions caused by the heavy rainfall. As of September 3, reports indicate that floods are receding in 17 provinces, but flood conditions still continue in others.
