Cyclones Bring Heavy Rains; Dry Weather for Hispaniola
Arthur Nears U.S. Eastern Coast, Neoguri Strengthening in the Pacific
The first hurricane in the Atlantic this year is expected to brush up against the North Carolina Outer Banks late Thursday into early Friday, with winds reaching up to 105 mph (Reuters). Currently, Hurricane Arthur is located 35 miles south of Cape Fear, with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph (NWS, Advisory #12). A hurricane warning is in effect for areas from Surf City, North Carolina, to Virginia border, including Pamlico Sound and eastern Albemarle Sound, where storm surges of 2 to 4 feet are expected.
Meanwhile, in the Northwestern Pacific, newly named Tropical Storm Neoguri is churning 170 miles southwest of Guam. (NWS Tiyan, Guam, Advisory #4) Neoguri is forecast to intensify into a typhoon by Sunday as it makes its way toward Asia. Powerful thunderstorms associated with this storm are already dropping heavy rainfall, at a rate of 2 inches per hour in some areas (NASA).

Drought Conditions Continue in Hispaniola
Below-average rainfall since the beginning of May has left southern Haiti and a large area of the Dominican Republic with seasonal deficits ranging from 150 to 200 mm (NOAA). Though rains have recently increased over some parts of Hispaniola, southern areas remain dry (FEWS). As long-term drought conditions and poor rainfall distribution endure, crop yields could be negatively impacted. NOAA expects dry weather in the coming week, with little to no rain expected along the coasts of the island, though moderate to locally heavy showers are possible over southeastern Haiti and eastern Dominican Republic.
