Heavy Rainfall Leads to Floods, Landslides in Indonesia
Heavy rainfall caused flooding in Indonesia. In Jakarta, approximately 144 mm (about 5.7 inches) of rain was recorded over a 24-hour period ending on February 21, with flood waters reaching up to 1.5 meters (59 inches) in some areas. Thousands of flooded homes have also been reported throughout Jakarta. (ECHO 21FEB17, The Star).
In Bekasi, a city just east of Jakarta, two fatalities, 400 displaced people, and 1,314 affected families were reported on February 22. According to reports, flood waters reached up to two meters in Bekasi (BNPB).
Earlier, on February 19, floods and landslides killed 17 people in North Sulawesi, a province in the Northern Islands of Indonesia (BNPB).

This Week in Hazards
- Due to severe storms, floods have occurred throughout California. An estimated 10 inches of rain was recorded in parts of southern California, before the storms moved toward northern California (USA Today). During the floods, evacuation orders were issued for parts of California, some areas of Los Angeles experienced loss of power, and Amtrak services were suspended (LA Times, US News). As of February 23, several flash flood watches and flood warnings are in effect for parts of northern California (NWS).
