Typhoon Haima Impacts the Philippines, Continues toward China
Typhoon Haima made landfall in the municipality of Peñablanca in the Cagayan Province of the Philippines late Wednesday night (local time), bringing destructive winds up to 140 miles per hour (225 kph) near its center (NDRRMC Severe Weather Bulletin #14, IFRC). Known locally as Lawin, the typhoon was the second to hit the northern Philippines in a week, following behind Typhoon Sarika which made landfall in the Aurora Province of eastern Luzon on October 15 (ReliefWeb).
More than 90,000 people were evacuated from the Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, and Cordillera Administrative regions ahead of Typhoon Haima’s landfall (NDRRMC SitRep #3). As of October 20, there are 230 evacuation centers operating in affected areas, and the number of people displaced is still being confirmed (ReliefWeb/UNOCHA).
As of October 20 (2100 UTC), Typhoon Haima is located approximately 169 nautical miles southeast of Hong Kong, and is expected to make a second landfall east of the urban center on Friday (JTWC Warning #25, NASA). As Haima approaches, the China Meteorological Administration has upgraded the emergency response level to address impacts, especially in potentially affected areas of Guangdong, Fujian, Jiangxi, and Hunan provinces (CMA).
