Hurricane Sandra Sets Sights on Mexico
As of November 25 (2100 UTC), Hurricane Sandra is churning off the coast of Mexico, located approximately 555 miles southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico, with maximum sustained winds at 115 miles per hour (NHC Advisory #9). Currently a Category 3 major hurricane, Sandra is forecast to continue strengthening over the next 24 hours.
Hurricane Sandra is expected to weaken before making landfall (at the earliest) late Friday (local time), though the National Hurricane Center advises that it is “too soon to know exactly how Sandra will affect portions of southern Baja California or the west coast of mainland Mexico” (NASA, NHC Discussion #9).

This Week in Hazards
- No damage has been reported (as of yet) following two “major magnitude” 7.6M earthquakes that struck within six minutes of each other near the Peru-Brazil border on November 24 (Reuters, USGS). According to reports, both quakes were very deep, with epicenters located far inland, posing no threat of generating a Pacific-wide tsunami (PTWC).
- Over the past week, heavy rainfall was observed over many parts of Central America, especially Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua, which may have improved vegetation conditions in areas that had been experiencing inconsistent and below-average rainfall (CPC). According to reports, heavy rainfall over Guatemala has led to at least five rivers exceeding their levels, including the Polochic River, which (as of November 23) has affected more than 3,000 people, and the Xeleca River, which has caused damage to houses in the St. Lawrence municipality (PAHO).
- The number of dengue cases in Hawaii continues to rise, with a total of 101 confirmed cases of locally-acquired dengue fever on Hawaii Island since early November (HDOH). According to the World Health Organization, it is estimated that there are over 50-100 million cases of dengue worldwide each year (WHO).
