Danny Becomes First Hurricane of 2015 Atlantic Season
Tropical Cyclone Danny, which formed in the Atlantic Ocean on August 18, has strengthened into the first hurricane of the 2015 Atlantic season. As of 1700 AST, Danny is located about 1,030 miles east of the Caribbean’s Windward Islands (NHC Advisory #10). As of the most recent advisory, no coastal watches or warnings are in effect. Imaging of Hurricane Danny shows it is a “small tropical cyclone,” but it is expected to continue strengthening over the next two days (NASA).
As Danny continues on track toward the islands of the Caribbean, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) urges the countries of the northern Leeward Islands to review readiness plans (CDEMA Public Information Note #2).
RVA Country Profile: Antigua & Barbuda
Let’s take a closer look at Antigua & Barbuda, one of the countries included in the Leeward Island group, in this week’s RVA Country Profile. Based on the island nation’s Multi-Hazard Risk indictors, which represent the combination of multi-hazard exposure, susceptibility to impact, and the relative inability to absorb, respond to, and recover from negative impacts that do occur over the short term, we see that Antigua & Barbuda is estimated to have relatively very high overall exposure, low vulnerability, and high coping capacity.
This Week in Hazards
- NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center Outlook for Africa over the next week forecasts heavy rainfall to continue over parts of Chad and Sudan (CPC). Heavy, widespread rain is also expected over parts of western Africa, including Mali and Niger, which are already experiencing localized flooding.
- Wildfires continue to blaze in the western United States, as reports indicate this year’s summer outbreaks have burned through nearly 7 million acres (as of August 17) (NASA). As of August 20, the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center reports a total of 28 uncontained large fires (11 in Oregon and 17 in Washington) (NWCC). The outlook for the next seven days calls for the potential for new large fires to decline over most of the region, but weather conditions may create the high potential for rapid growth of some existing uncontained fires (NWCC).
