Tropical Storm 30W (Haikui) remains active, moving across the South China Sea towards Vietnam

Here’s a looping satellite image…and what the computer models are showing

According to the JTWC, satellite imagery depicts an area of intense deep convection obscuring the low level circulation center.

Upper level analysis indicates a favorable environment, with low wind shear and good poleward outflow. The system is expected to intensify while passing over the South China Sea…peaking near 55 knots with gusts to 70 knots within 24 hours.

Near 48 hours, the system will track into slightly cooler waters and encounter increasing wind shear…which should serve to weaken the system.

After 72 hours, TS 30W will continue tracking southwestward, making landfall along the coast of Vietnam just after 96 hours. The system will weaken rapidly and is forecast to dissipate by 120 hours.

The models differ after 36 hours, which translates to an overall low confidence in the JTWC forecast track.

Maximum sustained winds as of the JTWC Warning #8 were 40 knots with gusts of 50 knots.
