Tropical Cyclone Activity Report – Pacific / Indian Oceans

Tropical Cyclone 19P (Ella) remains active…located about 326 NM northeast of Suva, Fiji

Tropical Cyclone 19P (Ella) has increased in strength…having reached the typhoon level

Tropical Cyclone Ella is moving away from the French island of Futuna…after passing close to its northern coast.

On the current JTWC forecast track, this storm would pass by approximately 222 NM north of Suva, Fiji within 2-days

According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), satellite imagery depicts tightly curved cloud bands wrapping into a compact convective center.

The recent intensification has occurred despite moderately strong 15-20 knots of wind shear.

TC Ella will track west-southwestward over the next 36 hours, with weakening thereafter. The track then shifts towards the west…which lasts through the remainder of the JTWC forecast period.

Maximum sustained winds as of the JTWC Warning #7 were 75 knots with gusts of 90 knots.

Central North Pacific

The central north Pacific hurricane season officially ended on November 30, 2016. Therefore, the last regularly scheduled tropical weather outlook of the 2016 hurricane season has occurred. During the off-season, special tropical weather outlooks will be issued as conditions warrant. The Pacific Disaster Center (PDC) will begin coverage of the central Pacific again on June 1, 2017.
