Hurricane Matthew Moves into the Caribbean
Since forming on September 28 near Barbados, Hurricane Matthew has moved into the Caribbean Sea, and is expected to kick up surf along the coasts of Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Venezuela, and Colombia over the next few days (NASA, NHC Advisory #6A). As of September 29 (2000 AST), Matthew is located about 150 miles north-northeast of Curaçao with maximum sustained winds at 75 miles per hour.
Hurricane Matthew is expected to strengthen over the next 48 hours before turning toward Jamaica and Haiti (NHC, ECHO). A Severe Weather Alert has been continued in Jamaica, while the national Meteorological Service has issued a warning to boaters to complete storm preparations ahead of Matthew’s arrival and stay alert for evacuation notices (Jamaica MetService).
PDC is closely monitoring Hurricane Matthew as it moves toward the central Caribbean, and will provide decision support and situational awareness products for the duration of the event.
