This Week in Hazards; Introducing “RVA Country Profiles”

PDC’s Global Hazards Atlas depicting current active Hazards around the world.

Over the past week, PDC has supported response operations in Nepal after a 7.8M earthquake devastated the country’s central and western regions. With much of the world focused on the severely affected Kathmandu Valley and remote mountain villages of Nepal, here’s an overview of Hazards impacting other areas of the world this week.

  • Severe Tropical Cyclone Quang formed in the Southern Indian Ocean on April 29, and is currently located 196 nautical miles northwest of Learmonth, Australia, with maximum sustained winds at 120 miles per hour (JTWC Warning #7).  Quang is tracking southeastward and is expected to weaken before reaching the coast of Western Australia (BOM).
  • Adverse weather conditions in Pakistan (April 27) resulted in the deaths of 45 people, and injured another 150 (ReliefWeb). Torrential rain collapsed buildings, and a “mini cyclone” (with winds at 68 miles per hour) uprooted trees.
  • Niger has activated a national epidemic committee to respond to a meningococcal disease outbreak that is suspected to have spread through seven of the country’s eight regions (WHO). As of April 29, the number of suspected cases since the start of 2015 has reached 1,543, including 147 deaths.
  • Continued heavy rainfall triggered landslides near the city of Salvador, Brazil on April 27 (ReliefWeb). As of April 29, at least 15 people had been confirmed dead, and search and rescue operations are ongoing (ECHO Daily Flash 29APR15).

RVA Country Profile: Chile

Over the past few weeks, Chile has experienced a number of Hazards requiring emergency response, including wildfires, flooding, and the eruption of two volcanoes (Villarrica and Calbuco). To introduce a new element to our weekly Hazard Highlights Report, we’ll take a look at Chile’s ability to absorb, respond to, and recover from Hazards via PDC’s Lack of Resilience Index.
