As of Monday, April 13, wildfires in the Khakassia and Chita regions of Siberia had claimed the lives of 26 people (ReliefWeb). Fires in the Khakassia region affected more than 30 villages, leaving an estimated 5,000 people homeless. Reports indicate that 900 people sought medical attention, with 77 of them requiring hospitalization. Substantial livestock losses have also been reported.

Authorities are continuing investigations into the cause of the fires, though the combination of human carelessness, strong winds, and warm temperatures has been suspected.

Response Operations Continue Following Heavy Rainfall in Northern Chile

In late March, heavy rainfall, flash floods, and mudslides devastated the Antofagasta, Atacama, and Coquimbo regions (NASA). According to meteorologists, though the recorded rainfall in the region was not extraordinary (barely exceeding 2 inches) the effect was disastrous in one of the driest regions of the world. As of April 12, reports indicate that more than 164,000 people have been affected and more than 8,000 homes have been destroyed or deemed uninhabitable (ReliefWeb/OCHA).

UN OCHA reports that response capacity in Chile has been stretched thin due to ongoing emergencies in the southern part of the country (read previous Hazard Highlights on Chile’s Wildfires and Villarica Volcano).
