Tropical Cyclone Sets Sights on Philippines; Flooding in Brazil

Tropical Cyclone Maysak Impacts Federated States of Micronesia, Weakens as it Heads for Philippines

Tropical Cyclone Maysak (known locally in the Philippines as Chedeng) is expected to make landfall in the Aurora or Isabela provinces of Luzon as a Category 1 or 2 typhoon early Sunday morning (local time) (ECHO, ReliefWeb/UNOCHA). On March 30-31, TC Maysak severely impacted Chuuk State and Yap in the Federated States of Micronesia as it passed over the islands as a super typhoon (PDC, ECHO). As of the most recent advisory (2100 GMT), TC Maysak is located approximately 636 nautical miles east of Manila with maximum sustained winds at 115 mph (100 knots) and kicking up waves up to 35 feet (JTWC Warning #28).

Indigenous Population Affected by Ongoing Flooding in Brazil

Heavy rainfall and flooding since February have severely affected an estimated 80,000 people in the State of Acre in far western Brazil (ReliefWeb/ACT Alliance). According to reports, the Acre River reached 18.4 meters in March, exceeding a previous record level of 17.66 meters reached in 1997. Among the most significantly affected by the ongoing adverse weather and flooding are communities of indigenous people, especially the Apurinã, who live along the Purus River.
