Rainfall Causes Landslides

This week we take a look at landslides caused by heavy rains and flooding in the United States and Indonesia.

A large landslide affected Snohomish County in Washington State, United States, on March 22 prompting Washington’s governor to declare a State of Emergency. Over 250 emergency responders reported to the scene including National Guard, State personnel, and others. The landslide impacted 49 structures with 16 homes destroyed and seven homes flooded. As of March 27, there are 16 confirmed deaths and Snohomish County officials have confirmed that 90 people are missing or unaccounted for. (FEMA)

A flood warning and flash flood watch issued by the National Weather Service remain in effect for the area (NWS). The latest forecast for Snohomish County shows a high chance of precipitation over the weekend (WU).

Heavy rains caused floods and landslides across the Wonogiri and Sukoharjo regencies in Central Java on March 25. Three hundred people were evacuated and three homes were damaged. A landslide caused two deaths. The local government worked with other agencies to evacuate the affected population and distribute supplies. (ADInet)
