Pacific Disaster Center is supporting response to Super Typhoon Haiyan, known as Yolanda in the Philippines, which is currently impacting Southeast Asia. Check out the image above for an example of PDC’s situational awareness products. Haiyan formed on November 3 and making its way westward, passed through the Philippines last night (8 November). Just before landfall Haiyan reached a maximum sustained wind speed of 195 mph (314 km/h), one of the highest wind speeds on record for a tropical cyclone. (GDACS)

The image above displays the estimated wind impacts for Haiyan, Haiyan is forecast to cause catastrophic damage in parts of Vietnam. As of Advisory 23, located about 700 miles southeast of Da Nang, Vietnam, Haiyan has maximum sustained winds of 144 mph with gusts up to 172 mph. (JTWC) Take a look below to see potential rainfall, some parts of the region are expected to receive approximately nine to 12 inches of precipitation.

Haiyan is also forecast to cause storm surge along parts of Vietnam’s east coast and southern China. For those of you who may wonder, storm surge is the large swells, high surf, and wind-driven waves that push onshore as a tropical cyclone impacts coastal areas. Storm surge can cause extreme damage to facilities, shorelines, highways, and bridges. To learn more about other cyclone effects visit the Tropical Cyclone Hazard Information page.
