Have you ever felt the ground shaking and wondered if it was an earthquake? PDC’s Global Hazards Atlas can provide near real-time  information on recent earthquakes as well as background data such as historical events, tectonic plate boundaries, and risk information. You can also use the Global Hazards Atlas to investigate the earthquake intensity zones around your home or community of interest.  This information helps individuals and communities prepare for the hazards that are most likely to occur. Just yesterday the Island of Hawaii experienced two small  earthquakes as shown in the image below.

Volcanoes – Paluweh, Indonesia

In recent volcano news, this past week on Palue Island, Indonesia the Paluweh volcano erupted during the early morning hours of August 10th. Hot ash and gas shot two kilometers in the air causing aviation authorities to issue an orange alert. (ECHO) More than 500 people were evacuated from the island and five people were killed. (ReliefWeb)

Hazard of Interest: Tropical Storm Erin

For those of you in the Caribbean and Southern United States we will be monitoring the progress of Tropical Storm Erin as she moves west through the Atlantic.  The latest advisory shows maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and some strengthening is expected during the next 48 hours.
