Flooding continues around the world. This week, Hawaii experienced flash flood warnings due to Tropical Storm Flossie (NWS).  In Japan, when the River Abu overflowed and flooded the city of Hagi, an estimated 5,000 people were evacuated (Intl. Charter Activation). PDC also monitored flood events in England, Ethiopia, Guinea, India, Kenya, Myanmar, Nicaragua, Russia, Sierra Leone, and Thailand.

Over the past few days heavy rainfall and river floods have been affecting the southern state of Karen. On July 30, the area received around 160 mm of accumulated rainfall (ECHO).  An estimated 37,000 people have been affected by floods, and 79 relief camps have been set up for displaced families.  Landslides caused by continued rainfall blocked some transportation routes and in Belin Township approximately 4,000 homes were flooded (ReliefWeb).

The latest forecast for Myanmar shows areas of continued precipitation over the weekend along with the arrival of Tropical Storm Jebi (WU).

Looking Ahead

PDC is also currently monitoring flooding events in: Ethiopia, Guinea, Myanmar, Nicaragua, and the United States.
