Over the past week flooding was observed in many parts of the world including: Colombia, Norway, Somalia, and the United States.

Below let’s take a closer look at the recent flooding events in Somalia and Colombia.

Precipitation & Flooding: Somalia

The Juba and Shabelle rivers in Somalia have experienced an increase in water level due to heavy seasonal rains.  Around 50,000 people have been displaced due to flash floods, and an estimated 6,397 hectares of crops have been reported damaged.  Humanitarian support efforts include rebuilding river banks, pumping flood water away from affected areas, and water  purification. The latest forecast for Somalia shows areas with little to no chance of precipitation in the coming week. (Weather Underground)

Precipitation & Flooding: Colombia

Heavy rain from May 15th to May 20th caused flooding and landslides in the department of Antioquia, located in north-western Colombia. Around 870 people were affected and 176 homes were damaged (ECHO Daily Flash). Some precipitation is expected to continue for the rest of the week (Weather Underground).

Looking Ahead

PDC is also currently monitoring flooding events in: Norway and the United States (North Dakota and Middle Mississippi Valley).
