Flooding Continues in Africa!

This week, flooding has affected Africa, South America, and North America, as well as the United Kingdom. The flooding in eastern Africa, which has been ongoing for several weeks, has turned deadly again.
Below, we take a closer look at the current flooding in Africa and South America.
Recent Flooding Events: East Africa

East Africa: According to a report by Agence France-Presse distributed by ReliefWeb, by 18 April, flooding in Kenya “has claimed 63 lives and forced tens of thousands from their homes in the past month.” Flooding in the region has been along both the Tana and Shabelle rivers, where continuing “heavy rains have also led to floods, landslides, damage to infrastructure, and crop losses across parts of Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi. The potential for locally torrential rainfall across Kenya and northwestern Tanzania is expected to further saturate ground conditions and possibly lead to additional flooding during the upcoming outlook period.” (NOAA)
This week, the Shabelle River flooding also reached into Somalia (ReliefWeb) where severe flooding is expected to continue into next week.

Argentina, Ecuador, and Peru have all experienced flooding this week. (ECHO) In Argentina, floods have been reported in Santa Fe Province, with houses and streets underwater, public transport and schools suspended, and electric services down. At least 90 families have been evacuated to temporary shelters. Heavy rainfall and floods continue to affect certain areas of the Coastal provinces of Ecuador as well, mainly in Esmeraldas and Manabí. While, in Peru, a State of Emergency has been declared by the government in several districts of the departments of Áncash, Cusco and Loreto, and the emergency declaration in the province of Arequipa has been extended for 30 days.

PDC is currently monitoring flooding events/threats in: the U.S. (Upper Great Lakes area and North Dakota); England, many areas of Africa (Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia, and elsewhere in Central and Eastern Africa), and South America (Peru, Ecuador, Argentina, and bordering areas).
