PDC Global Hazards Atlas displaying 3 hour precipitation accumulation...with an area of disturbed weather (circled in orange) that has a medium chance of developing into tropical cyclones within 24 hours...near the NE coast of Australia
The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), is pointing out an area of disturbed weather today, located approximately 70 NM south of Willis Island, Australia. Satellite imagery shows an elongated, although consolidating low level circulation center, with deep thunderstorms in the area. A looping radar image from Willis Island, shows fragmented convective banding wrapping into this circulation center. This area of circulation has 20-25 knot (23-29 mph) winds near the center, with 25-30 knot (29-35 mph) winds over the northern edge of this circulation center.
Sea level pressure in this area is running 1000 millibars (29.53 inches of mercury) at the time of this writing. Upper air analysis shows good poleward and equatorial outflow, however moderate 20 knot vertical wind shear is hindering convective development. Given the current environmental conditions, the JTWC is giving this tropical disturbance a medium chance of spinning up into a tropical cyclone over the next 24 hours.
