Tropical Cyclone Activity Report – Pacific / Indian Oceans

There are no active tropical cyclones in the Pacific or Indian Oceans…or adjacent seas

PDC Global Hazards Atlas displaying 3 hour precipitation accumulation...with an area of disturbed weather (circled in yellow) that has a low chance of developing into a tropical cyclone within 24 hours...in the South Indian Ocean

Now retired Tropical cyclone 17S (Rusty), is out of the picture…inland over northwest Australia. Although former tropical cyclone 18S, which was last active well offshore from Cocos Island, in the South Indian Ocean, is trying to perhaps regenerate. The current location of this area of disturbed weather (circled in yellow above) is approximately 240 NM southeast of Cocos Island. Satellite imagery shows a recent increase in deep convection…along the western half of a well defined low level circulation center.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) estimated wind speeds in the western side of this circulation center to be running 25-30 knots (29-35 mph). Sea surface temperatures were slightly on the cool side, at about 26C (78-79F), which was limiting development at the moment. At the same time, vertical wind shear aloft was moderately strong 10-20 knots (12-23 mph). Considering these marginal environmental conditions, the JTWC is giving this tropical disturbance a low potential for development during the next 24 hours.
