Another busy week of flooding! Over the past week flooding events were observed in many places around the world, including Australia (New South Wales and Queensland), England, North America (Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and Florida), South America (Bolivia), Indonesia (Jambi, Riau, Banten, South Sumatra), and Africa (Zambia, Madagascar, Mozambique, Malawi). Below, let’s take a closer look at the recent flooding events in Africa!

Threats of flooding continue for areas within Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique as torrential rains are forecast for a fifth week in a row. Weeks of rainfall have resulted in flooding within the forecast region, as well as outbreaks of cholera, and the displacement of population (NWS/CPC). In Mozambique, 240,827 persons were reported to have been affected by the current floods, 113 killed, and 185,897 temporary displaced; the most affected provinces are Gaza, Inhambane, and Maputo. In addition, 413 cases of cholera and 2 related deaths were reported for the Cabo Delgado Province in northern Mozambique (UNCT Mozambique).

Meanwhile, Tropical Cyclone Haruna is active in the Mozambique Channel, bringing torrential rains, resulting in flooding in many areas in south west Madagascar. According to preliminary information, an estimated 4 people have been reported killed and 2 missing, 1,440 houses inundated by flood waters, 13 houses completely destroyed, and 13 roads have been cut off. The latest 7-day Africa Hazards Outlook (February 21-27) shows areas at risk of flooding within Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, and Madagascar.

    • Rokan Hulu regency
    • Approx. 21,000 persons affected and at least 3,452 evacuated
  • Jambi, Indonesia (ReliefWeb/Jakarta Post)
    • River Flooding
    • Affected districts include: Danau Teluk, Jambi Timur, Jelutung, Kota Baru, Pasar Jambi, Pelayangan and Telanaipura
    • Approx. 1,200 households have sought temporary shelter
