Tropical Cyclone Activity Report – Pacific / Indian Oceans

Tropical cyclone 10P (Garry) is active in the southwest Pacific Ocean…located approximately 145 NM east-northeast of Pago Pago, American Samoa (Strengthening tropical cyclone…sustained winds of 45 knots, with gusts to near 55 knots)

Tropical cyclone 10P (Garry) is located approximately 145 NM east northeast of Pago Pago, American Samoa. Garry has tracked southeastward at 08 knots over the past six hours. Satellite imagery shows a partially exposed low level circulation center, with deep convection continuing to be sheared over the eastern semi-circle. This upper level shearing is moderately strong, blowing in the 10-20 knot range (12-23 mph). Meanwhile, the surface winds are running near 45 knots, with gusts to near 55 knots (52-63 mph).

Garry has moved offshore to the northeast of American Samoa. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) shows

this gradually strengthening tropical cyclone shifting its course more towards the east-northeast now, keeping it over open ocean. This system will remain over the ocean, away from land through the remainder of its life. The small islands of Bora Bora, and Papeete will be out of harms way…well to the northeast of Garry’s track path. Mariners will need to remain a good distance from this strengthening tropical cyclone over the next five days or so.

Tropical cyclone 12S (Peta) is dissipating in the south Indian Ocean…located approximately 180 NM east of Learmonth, Australia (Weakening tropical cyclone…sustained winds of 35 knots, with gusts to near 45 knots) – Final Warning

Tropical cyclone 12S (Peta) just started yesterday, although is already been given its final warning by the JTWC. Peta is located approximately 180 NM east of Learmonth, Australia. 12S has tracked south-southwest at 06 knots over the past six hours. Satellite imagery shows a weakening system, as cloud tops have warmed, with the overall structure becoming irregular.

Peta is overland now, and observations in the area are showing rising air pressures, and that winds are weakening. Here’s the looping radar image from Dampier, Australia…where Peta has moved inland. Since this short-lived tropical cyclone is over land, and with little chance of restrengthening over the ocean, the JTWC is discontinuing warnings on this system. Precipitation is being brought inland from the warm ocean, which is providing much needed rainfall for this dry interior section of Australia.
