Tropical cyclone 01W (Sonamu) remains active in the South China Sea…located approximately 290 NM south-southeast of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (Weakening tropical depression…sustained winds of 30 knots, with gusts to near 40 knots)

Tropical cyclone 01W (Sonamu) remains active in the South China Sea, located about 290 NM south-southeast of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. 01W has drifted southwestward
at only 01 knots over the past six hours…or is nearly stationary. Satellite imagery shows a rapidly deteriorating tropical system, with unfavorable environment conditions for any further development.
These environmental conditions include…markedly cooler sea water temperatures under tropical depression Sonamu, along with 20-30 knots of vertical wind shear above. The JTWC suggests that this tropical cyclone will dissipate over water by 36 hours, although dissipation may occur sooner due to the poor environmental conditions described above.

A new area of disturbed weather (circled in red above) is now active in the western Timor Sea, located approximately 590 NM west of Darwin, Australia. Winds in this area are estimated to be 25-30 knots. Satellite imagery indicates that a circulation center, with its consolidating convection…is moving westward at near 9 knots. An array of favorable environmental conditions point towards a high chance of a significant tropical cyclone developing, within the next 24 hours…according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC).
