Tropical Cyclone Activity Report – Pacific / Indian Oceans

Tropical cyclone 27W (Wukong) is weakening over the South China Sea…located approximately 285 NM south-southwest of Manila, Philippines (Tropical depression…sustained winds

of 25 knots, with gusts to near 35 knots)

Tropical cyclone 27W (Wukong) is dissipating now, and the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) has issued its last warning on this system. Satellite imagery shows the low level circulation center has become ragged, as the main area of thunderstorms was sheared by the winds aloft…and is located almost 200 NM to the north. As these unfavorable environmental conditions exist, Wukong is dissipating. The strong vertical wind shear will bring its complete demise, along with a cold NE surface wind surge in the South China Sea. // The JTWC had given its last warning on this system, although decided to keep it going for a while longer.

PDC Global Hazards Atlas displaying 3 hour precipitation accumulation...and an area of disturbed weather that has a high chance of developing into a tropical cyclone within 24 hours

This area of disturbed weather (circled in red above) in the southwest Pacific, is located approximately 225 NM east of Honiara, in the Soloman Islands. Winds in the area are estimated to be 20-25 knots. Satellite imagery shows that a circulation center is located near 9.2S and 163.7E. Deep convection (thunderstorms) is gathering over a consolidating low level circulation center. Low vertical wind shear, favorable poleward and equatorial outflow, along with weather model forecasts of development…indicates a high chance of this tropical disturbance becoming a significant tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours. Here’s a JTWC satellite image of this area.
