Tropical cyclone Claudia (03S) remains active in the South Indian Ocean…lo

Tropical storm Claudia (03S) remains active over the South Indian Ocean, well to the south-southeast of the small island of Diego Garcia. It has now taken a turn to the southeast. This has put the track of Claudia over a cooler sea surface, as it tracks into high latitudes. This in turn is quickly diminishing 03S, which will likely become a tropical depression by Thursday morning…and dissipating shortly thereafter.

Tropical cyclone Evan (04P) is now active in the South Pacific Ocean…located approximately 145 NM west of Pago Pago, American Samoa (Strengthening tropical storm…50 knot sustained winds – gusts to near 65 knots)

The area of disturbed weather (between Samoa and Fiji…in the south Pacific Ocean) yesterday…has now spun up into tropical storm Evan (04P). This storm first appeared over the ocean to the north of the Fiji area, and has moved slowly eastward towards Samoa. The latest JTWC forecast has Evan crossing the island of Samoa as a tropical storm, with 50 knot sustained winds, with gusts to 65 knots. This will bring heavy weather conditions, with strong and gusty winds, pounding surf along the coasts, and flooding rainfall to the entire area today through Thursday into Friday.

TS Evan strengthens into a typhoon shortly thereafter, as it moves over the ocean a short distance to the east of Samoa. This tropical cyclone then stops and swings back over the small island of Apia…with JTWC forecast typhoon strength winds of 80 knots, and gusts to near 100 knots. Pago Pago, located just to the south and southeast of the path of this very dangerous typhoon, will receive intense weather conditions as well…along with the rest of this area. Residents of these three small islands should be preparing for a major blow!

Typhoon Evan then moves back over the open ocean to the southwest of these small islands. 04P begins to pick up speed now, as it moves rather quickly in the general direction of Fiji and Vanua Levu, and the rest of the numerous, very small islands…that dot that part of the southwest Pacific. Wind speeds peak in strength over the ocean between Samoa and Fiji. As Evan nears the Fiji area, this tropical cyclone will lose a bit of strength, although is forecast to remain a typhoon as it slides by just to the southeast and south of the area. Heavy weather conditions will strike this area around December 16-17…although there may be changes in the JTWC forecast path by that time. Fiji and Vanua Levu, and environs…should be on high alert, keeping a very close eye on this powerful storm!
