Tropical cyclone Claudia (03S)…remains active in the South
Indian Ocean…located approximately 775 NM south of Diego Garcia (Weakening typhoon…65 knot sustained winds – gusts to near 80 knots)

Typhoon Claudia (03S) remains active over the South Indian Ocean, well to the south of the small island of Diego Garcia. It will track south a little further, and then take a turn to the southeast. As this happens, it will move over cooler sea surface temperatures, as it tracks into high latitudes. This in turn will cause a gradual weakening of this typhoon, dropping down into the tropical storm category once again…later today. There are no islands in the path of Claudia…and Australia remains far to the east.

PDC Global Hazard Atlas displaying 3 hour precipitation accumulation, and an area of disturbed weather that the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) is giving a high chance of developing over the next 24 hours)
This area of disturbed weather (between America Samoa and Fiji…in the south Pacific Ocean) is rapidly consolidating, with a low level circulation and deep thunderstorms. There is banding of clouds wrapping into the center of this area of low pressure. It’s in an area of very favorable environment conditions for further development. Sea surface temperatures in this area are all the way up to 84-86F degrees, along with low vertical wind shear of only 5-10 knots above this tropical disturbance. Maximum sustained surface winds are estimated to be 27-32 knots (31-37 mph). The JTWC is giving this area a high chance of becoming a tropical cyclone within 12-24 hours.
