Tropical cyclone Bopha (26W)remains active over the South Ch

ina Sea…located approximately 295 NM west-southwest of Manila, Philippines (Tropical storm…55 knot sustained winds – gusts to near 70 knots)

Tropical storm Bopha (26W) has weakened overnight, and has been downgraded by the JTWC to tropical storm classification. Environmental conditions are now unfavorable for strengthening. Thus, Bopha will show steady weakening, leading to dissipation over the ocean within 120 hours…or by December 11th.

Bopha has left a trail of death and destruction over the southern Philippines! At last count, over 350 people have died, with almost 400 still missing. Although about 20 tropical cyclones strike the Philippines per year, more rarely do they impact the southern island of Mindanao. The location of this island makes it more difficult for evacuation…and recovery efforts.

Tropical cyclone 03S
is now active over the South Indian Ocean…located approximately 385 NM southeast of Diego Garcia (Strengthening…35 knot sustained winds – gusts to near 45 knots)

Tropical cyclone 03S is now active over the South Indian Ocean, to the southeast of the small island of Diego Garcia. It will track southwest and then southward, with favorable environmental conditions for strengthening. The JTWC forecast calls for a gradual increase in wind speeds, reaching the typhoon level within 72 hours. It won’t last long at that stage however, and soon thereafter begin weakening…as it heads over cooler sea surface temperatures. There are no islands in the projected path of 03S.
