Flooding, flooding, and more flooding again this week! Heavy and persistent rains continued to fall in parts of Africa and Asia. In Africa, flooding was observed in Sudan, South Sudan, Niger, and Nigeria. The threat of flooding will continue to loom over these countries, as well as eastern Chad, Ethiopia, Mali, Burkina Faso, Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, and Sierra Leone, throughout next week as rains are forecast to continue (NOAA). In Asia, flooding was observed in North Korea, China, Myanmar, Thailand, Nepal, India, and Pakistan. In the western hemisphere, flooding was also observed in the United States, particularly Texas
and Florida, and more flooding may be on its way!

Tropical Storm Isaac is still active in the Caribbean, and is anticipated to bring torrential rains to the island of Hispaniola, which may result in flooding and landslides (NOAA). Impacts to Haiti are of particular concern as approximately 400,000 people are still living in temporary shelters (AlertNet/Reuters).

Precipitation & Flooding: Russia

Once again, flash floods have impacted southern Russia’s Krasnodar region. At least 4 people were reported killed and 1,500 evacuated. Hundreds of homes, as well as a school and a hospital, were flooded. Just a little more than a month’s time has passed since flash floods claimed the lives of 171 people in the Krasnodar region in early July. (RSOE/ReliefWeb)
The latest forecast for Russia shows areas of continued precipitation.
Precipitation & Flooding: North Korea
Days of torrential rains have impacted North Korea, resulting in severe floods and mudslides. At least 3 people were killed in North Hwanghae Province, and 170 houses destroyed, leaving many in need of shelter. Three other people were killed in South Phyongan Province, and 300 houses destroyed or inundated by the flood waters. North Korea was also impacted by severe flooding in July, which killed over 80 people, and left tens of thousands homeless. (ReliefWeb)
The latest forecast for North Korea shows some areas of continued precipitation.
