Water, water, everywhere… This week certainly felt that way! Extensive rains stretching across north-central Africa have caused severe flooding in eastern Chad, western and eastern Sudan, and in Nigeria. Additional rainfall is expected to fall throughout next week, which may also cause flooding in Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, Mali, Burkina Faso, and in Ethiopia (NOAA). In the America’s, flooding was observed in Canada’s Saskatchewan Province, the United States, in the city of New York, and Venezuela. Concerns of flooding have also been raised for southwestern Guatemala as heavy rains are predicted to impact the region over the next few days (NOAA).
In other parts of the world, heavy and persistent rains continued to fall in parts of East and Southeast Asia, particularly Japan, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, and the Philippines. Below, is a closer look at some of these recent flood events!
Precipitation & Flooding: Philippines

Little relief can be felt as weeks of persistent rains continue to impact the already flood-soaked regions of Luzon. Response and relief efforts were further hindered as Typhoon Kai-Tak (Helen) battered the region with additional heavy rains. According to the latest reports, over 1,700 people were evacuated on August 14 due to flash flooding in Masinloc, Zambales. Additional flooding incidents were also reported in San Fernando and Bauang, La Union. A landslide reported in Baguio City killed two miners and injured another. Concerns of further flooding have been raised as fallen rain descends from higher elevations. (NDRRMC/ReliefWeb)

Thousands have been impacted by flooding in Myanmar’s Delta Region this week. Described as “massive”, floodwaters have displaced approximately 2,500 persons in the Pathein District, forcing them to seek shelter in temporary camps and monasteries. Hundreds of villages are reported flooded, including Kanyin Village, in Thar Paung Township, were flooding has left only 3 of 70 houses habitable.
