In recent years, spring floods in the U.S. have caused major damage. However, due to lighter than normal snowfall in the recent winter months, the current outlook suggests that no area of the United States faces a high risk of major or extreme flooding this spring. Other areas of the globe haven’t be so lucky, such as Canada and Russia. Below, we’ll look into a couple of the most-troubled areas currently suffering from flooding.
Precipitation & Flooding: Peru

According to a recent United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN-OCHA) report, heavy rains have caused severe flooding in Loreto, Peru. As a result of the flooding, over 180,000 people have been reported as “in need” and four are confirmed dead. As of April 30th, over 15,800 people were housed in 132 temporary shelters in the area.
The weather forecast for Peru shows large areas of rain and thunderstorms, suggesting that additional flooding is still possible.
Precipitation & Flooding: The Comoros

Over the weekend, UN-OCHA reported that torrential rains have impacted the islands of Comoros for more than a week. The heavy rains have impacted the entire territory, causing severe flooding. As of April 28th, over 46,100 people were reported affected and over 9,200 displaced.
The weather forecast shows rain for the island of Quani only, suggesting that the flooding may continue in that area, although the other islands have a drier weather outlook.

Over the next week, PDC will continue to monitor areas of high precipitation and keep a close eye on flooding across the globe. PDC is currently monitoring flooding events in: Afghanistan, Africa, Australia, Brazil, Burundi, Comoros, Dominican Republic, England, Haiti, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, South America, Tanzania, Uganda, and the United States.
