PDC Weekly Global Flood Survey: April 12, 2012

This week, flooding continues to be observed in many regions around the word! In Oceania and Southeast Asia, persistent rains continued to impact Australia, Fiji, and The Philippines. In Latin America, flooding has been reported in Haiti, Dominican Republic, and Peru. Also, in Africa, flooding has been reported in southern Kenya.

Below we will take a closer look at the ongoing flooding event in Peru, as well as the recent flooding event in Kenya.

Precipitation & Flooding: Peru

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN-OCHA), persistent rainfall continues to impact Peru, resulting in severe flooding and landslides. In Lima, at least 5,990 people have been affected. In the district of Chosica, 1 person was killed, 1,607 made homeless, 3,481 affected, and over 850 houses damaged. Since last November, 49 people have been reported killed, 9 missing, 98 injured, as well as 191,241 left homeless, and 442,722 affected by heavy rain and flooding.

The latest forecasts for Lima and Chosica show cloudy conditions for the remainder of the week.

Precipitation & Flooding: Kenya

The Kenya Red Cross reported on Wednesday that heavy rainfall in Taiti-Taveta District, Southern Kenya has resulted in severe flash flooding. Flooding was reported to have swept away houses and livestock, as well as destroying crops. A total of 583 households and 2,688 people were reported as affected.

The latest forecast for the town of Taveta in the Taiti-Taveta District shows a continued chance of precipitation throughout the week.
