Another busy week of flooding around the world!  Once again we see flooding occurring on every continent.  Over the past week, heavy precipitation in Southeast Asia and Oceania has caused flooding in Indonesia, Vietnam, and Fiji. Persistent rain and flooding have also been observed in the United States, particularly in Oregon and Texas, as well as in the northern region of South America, to include Brazil and Peru.

Below we take a closer look at the ongoing flooding event in Fiji, as well as the recent flooding event in Haiti.

Precipitation & Flooding: Fiji

According to a recent United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN-OCHA) report, tropical depression TD17F and Tropical Cyclone Daphne have caused heavy rains and flooding in Fiji. A State of Natural Disaster was declared in the Western Division for parts of the island of Viti Levu. Currently over 8,500 people are reported to be in evacuation centers.  Authorities are also reporting 5 deaths and 4 missing in association with the flooding.

The Fiji Meteorological Service’s weather outlook shows continued precipitation forecasted for the next several days.

Precipitation & Flooding: Haiti

According to RSOE EDIS, weeks of rainfall in Port-au-Prince have resulted in flooding, mudslides, and rockslides killing 6. Many survivors of the 2010 earthquake continue to live in temporary shelters leaving them vulnerable to the rain and flooding. According to UN-OCHA, the recent rainfall is the start of an early rainy season that is predicted to last until June. UN-OCHA is also predicting an increase in the number of Cholera cases with this year’s rainy season.

The forecast for Port-au-Prince shows a chance of thunderstorms and continued precipitation over the next few days.
