PDC is an applied science, information and technology center, working
to reduce disaster risks and impacts to peoples' lives and property.
For more than a decade, we have worked to improve disaster early warning
systems and to develop better risk mitigation practices.
Our work is accomplished by integrating technologies in remote sensing,
modeling, visualization, and communications and developing new tools and
applications in these areas. Using these advanced techniques and technologies,
we transform bits of data and disparate information into actionable knowledge
useful to the public and to decision makers. This involves acquiring and
interpreting complex data streams, combining datasets and creating new
information through techniques as disparate as field inspections and
revisiting historical records.
As a result of PDC's dedication to preserving lives and assisting communities
in recovery from disaster, we have a mature set of systems and tools that
provide disaster managers, decision makers, and planners with the information
they need to better plan, prepare for, and respond to disasters. At the same
time, innovative systems and tools are constantly under development.
Although from our founding, PDC's primary focus has been on the Asia Pacific
and Indian Ocean regions, an area where we remain profoundly engaged, we also
have active projects around the world. We work and partner with international
and regional organizations and with national, local, and city governments,
ranging from the United Nations to county councils and mayors. We also have
active partnerships in the private sector to deliver and scale our solutions
for various constituencies.
Our ultimate goal is to foster disaster-resilient communities around
the world through better use of science, information, and technology.
