Senior Policy Forum:
Mega Disasters & Global Tipping Points


In August, PDC conducted the Senior Policy Forum, "Mega Disasters - A Global 'Tipping Point' in Natural Disaster Policy, Planning and Development." The forum brought together a broad spectrum of public, private, and academic representatives from international, regional, national, and local agencies. International Highlights

Tracking Hazards Throughout the Region

This past quarter, the PDC tracked a variety of disaster events including the destructive Java tsunami, the impacts of Typhoons Saomai, Xangsane, and Shanshan, and the threatened eruption of the Philippines' Mt. Promoting Disaster Information Sharing in Southeast Asia
As part of an ongoing collaboration to promote disaster information sharing in Southeast Asia, PDC has delivered a prototype Online Southeast Asia Disaster Inventory to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and several ASEAN Member Countries.

Hawaii Support

This past quarter, PDC actively supported Hawaii State Civil Defense and other agencies by tracking Tropical Cyclone Daniel as it approached the Hawaiian Islands, and also assisted HSCD with its participation in two major exercises-- Operation Lightning 2006, and the Improvised Nuclear Device Exercise.

In addition, Center has formally signed a contract with the Department of Land and Natural Resources to conduct modeling and risk assessments for all 140 dams within the State. More in the next issue...

Hawaii Community Outreach

PDC has an ongoing commitment to Hawaii to support educational and outreach opportunities for local schools, professional organizations, and the public. Activities this quarter have included hosting middle school students as part of an event organized by the Women in Technology Program, and actively participating in Maui's Islands of the World Sustainability Fair.

Of Note . . .

A new issue of PDC Perspectives is available, titled Strengthening Decision Making for Tsunami Early Warning in the Pacific Islands . The findings are based on PDC's participation in a recent United Nations-sponsored workshop on tsunami early warning systems.

Recent media coverage has included reporting about the PDC's Senior Policy Forum, support to the fire relief operations for the Maui brushfires, and analysis of recent weather patterns in Hawaii.
