July 22, 2010 – 9:30 a.m. HST (19:30 UTC): The long lasting area of disturbed weather in the Caribbean has finally become organized enough to have become “tropical depression 03 (TD 03).” According to the latest computer models, it will soon start moving away from most of the Caribbean Islands, although not before dropping heavy rains and thunderstorms in the central and southern Bahamas. Winds have been running around 35 mph in the Bahamas according to surface observations and ship reports.

TD 03 is forecast to move near or over Andros—the largest of The Bahamas Out Islands, which is sparsely populated—and then on towards the Florida Keys, moving through the Florida Straits into the Gulf of Mexico. According to news reports, including one in the Telegraph (London, England), the approaching weather system has already shut down BP’s efforts to drill a relief well and other control and clean-up activities related to the oil spill.

Models show TD 03 soon becoming a tropical storm, and impacting the U.S. Gulf Coast somewhere between Texas and Louisiana early Monday morning. If everything goes as indicated by the models, this will become the second tropical storm of the season, taking on the name Bonnie later today. There is still a good deal of uncertainty as to the track and intensity forecasts, so there may very well be changes up ahead.
