This image of hurricane tracks (1945–2008), in which each line represents the movement of a single storm, is taken from the Hawaii Edition of PDC’s Natural Hazards and Vulnerabilities Atlas. It demonstrates that no island in the state is safe from hurricanes.

On Friday, May 29, from 3 to 5 p.m., Pacific Disaster Center will host experts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Weather Service (NWS) Honolulu Forecast Office. They will be on Maui to present a Hurricane Season Preparedness Workshop, which is open to the public, free of charge. The workshop will be held in the training rooms at PDC, 1305 North Holopono Street, Suite 2, in the Maui Research and Technology Park, Kihei. The experts, will discuss the 2009 hurricane season outlook, and then answer questions from those present.

Speakers from the NWS Honolulu Forecast Office will include Meteorologist-in-Charge Jim Weyman and Warning Coordination Meteorologist Ray Tanabe. PDC Executive Director Ray Shirkhodai and Senior Weather Specialist Glenn James will also participate.

This is your chance to:

  • Get Central Pacific hurricane facts and figures directly from the scientists who develop the data;
  • Hear about the hurricane activity expected in the 2009 season, which begins on June 1;
  • Discuss your household’s preparedness for hurricanes and other potential disasters with NWS and PDC specialists;
  • Find out what options are available to you for understanding tropical cyclones, and perhaps tracking their movements; and
  • Ask about whatever other related needs and concerns you have.
