During the month of April, Hawaii observes "Tsunami Awareness Month." This year, Tsunami Awareness Month is particularly significant given the devastating Great Sumatra Earthquake and Indian Ocean tsunami that struck a dozen nations in the Indian Ocean region on December 26, 2004. It is also the 60th anniversary of the tsunami that killed 159 residents in Hawaii on April 1, 1946.

Pacific Disaster Center's website links you to detailed background information on tsunamis, as well as family preparedness measures and other useful tools and sources.
