Major Earthquake Strikes Tonga


A strong 7.9 Magnitude earthquake struck offshore of the Pacific Island nation of Tonga at 15:26 UTC on May 3. There are no immediate reports of injuries, damage, or a tsunami impact.

The strongest earthquake of 2006 briefly prompted tsunami alerts throughout the Pacific Islands—including for Tonga, New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa, American Samoa, and Hawaii. All tsunami alerts have been cancelled by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
